These efforts were humble in their origin, then evolving into the National SafeNight activities, the creation of the Stump the Violence Youth Leadership Institute and eventually into Hartford Communities That Care, Inc. Combined; these efforts represent one of the oldest, continuously known initiatives geared toward training the youth themselves to research, and address drug use and youth violence through workshops, conferences, forums, public awareness campaigns and development and implementation of afterschool and summer programming. The Stump youth have gone on to train and educate other youth and adults in ten states and have engaged policy makers at the U.S. Congress, Connecticut Legislators and the Mayor and Council-members at Hartford’s City Hall.
